There are summits you never forget, and the Reculet is one of them. Its big cross planted on the ridge, the void that opens all at once onto Lake Geneva and the Mont Blanc range: it is one of the finest balconies in the Jura, and one of the landmark hikes of the Pays de Gex. Here is what you need to prepare for it and savour it.

One of the roofs of the Jura
At 1,719 metres, the Reculet is one of the highest summits in the Jura range, very close to its highest point, the Crêt de la Neige. It looks straight down on the Pays de Gex and the Geneva plain. Its famous summit cross, visible from far off, makes it both a landmark and a favourite objective for hikers in the region.
The route and the effort
You usually reach the summit by climbing from the foot of the range, on the Pays de Gex side, on fine forest paths that come out onto the mountain pastures and the ridges. The climb is sustained, with a serious amount of ascent that calls for good fitness and good boots. The reward comes on the summit ridge, where the panorama opens out through 360 degrees, from Lake Geneva to the Alps.
The panorama, and staying careful
At the top, in clear weather, the view takes in the lake, the Mont Blanc and a large part of the alpine arc. It is also a miniature high mountain environment. The wind can be violent on the ridge, fog comes up fast, and in winter the area becomes demanding. You start early, you keep an eye on the forecast, and you leave yourself a margin on your return time.
Wildlife, plants and respect for the place
The Reculet lies at the heart of the Haute Chaîne du Jura national nature reserve. You come across chamois and mountain pasture flowers, and you respect the rules of the place: stay on the paths, pick nothing, carry your rubbish back down, keep your dog on a lead. That is the condition for this summit staying as alive as it is today.
