Both fill a day and both show people a good time. But only one leaves a mark on the way the team works afterwards.
People often get in touch with the same intention, to bring a team closer, to thank their staff, to start a new dynamic. And almost always the same hesitation comes up. Should they go for a well-drilled indoor activity, an escape room, a workshop, karting, or for a day in the open air. I have an opinion, of course, but I will try to be fair, because both have their merits. The real question is not which is the more entertaining, but which leaves something behind once everyone is back at the office.

What indoor team building does very well
Indoor formats have real strengths. They are simple to organise, predictable, independent of the weather, and often short. An escape room or a workshop creates laughter, a little competition, a welcome break in a busy week. It works well for taking a breath together and breaking the routine. The drawback is that these activities stay tightly framed, quick, and everyone slips back into their usual role soon enough. You have had a good time, but you have not necessarily seen your colleagues in a different light.
What a day in the open air sets off
Outdoors, something shifts. Time stretches out, phones go back in pockets, and shared effort brings the masks down. On a path the hierarchy fades, people help each other on the climbs, and real conversation happens over hours of walking. I have seen colleagues who had been passing each other in corridors for years discover each other in a single morning. Nature does not cheat, it puts everyone on the same level, and that is precisely what creates a deep connection. It is not a game that ends, it is an experience you go through together.
The comparison on what matters
| Criterion | Indoor team building | A day in the open air |
|---|---|---|
| Organisation | Simple, independent of the weather | To be pinned to a season, with a plan B |
| Length of the high point | Short, a few hours | A day that stretches out |
| Getting away from screens | Partial | Total, you are far from the office |
| Effect on relationships | A good shared memory | Bonds that change daily working life |
| Ideal for | Taking a breath, breaking the routine | Bonding lastingly, restarting a dynamic |

What is left once you are back at the office
That is the real test of any team building. The next day, what remains. After an indoor format, what often remains is a group photo and a few shared laughs, which is already worth something. After a day in the open air, something else remains, quieter and more durable. Colleagues who are finally on first-name terms, a conversation started on a path that carries on at the coffee machine, a new trust born from a hand offered on a climb. It is these small invisible changes that keep a team running smoothly for months. You cannot measure them in a table, but you feel them in the way people talk to each other and work together. That is exactly what I am trying to set off when I build a day.
So which should you choose?
If your aim is to mark a pleasant pause in an already full day, an indoor format will do the job perfectly, and it has simplicity on its side. But if you are looking to transform the way your teams talk and work together, to create the bonds that make everything else easier for the rest of the year, then nature offers ground that nothing indoors can replace. Shared effort, open air and unhurried time do a job that no escape room and no team lunch can imitate. It is not a question of budget, it is a question of ambition for your people.
