Preparing well for your hike so you can make the most of it

A good hike takes a little preparation. Here is the essential kit and know-how for setting off with peace of mind, and if you are in any doubt, there is always time to talk it through before departure.

The four essentials before you set off

Equipment

Proper walking boots, breathable layers, a waterproof jacket, plenty of water, energy snacks and a small first aid kit. Pack your bag to suit the length of the outing and the season.

Fitness

Choose a route that matches your level: a successful outing is worth more than an over-ambitious goal. If you are unsure about the difficulty, it is always worth talking it over before you leave.

Safety & weather

Check the forecast the day before and again on the morning itself, tell someone close to you which route you are taking, and never hesitate to turn back if conditions deteriorate.

Respect for nature

Stay on the paths, take your litter home, watch wildlife from a distance and leave nature untouched for those who come after you.
